Commanders QB Carson Wentz facing extended absence with broken finger

The Washington Commanders don’t expect to have starting quarterback Carson Wentz for at least a month due to a broken ring finger he suffered during Thursday night’s win over the Chicago Bears.

Through the first six weeks of the season, Wentz has thrown 10 touchdowns and six interceptions, and ranks 13th among NFL quarterbacks, averaging 248.2 passing yards per game. He has also been sacked a league-high 23 times.

Washington acquired Wentz in a trade with the Indianapolis Colts to take over as the starter this season. 

The Commanders (2-4) will turn to six-year pro Taylor Heinicke under center while Wentz is out, starting with Sunday’s home game against Green Bay. Heinicke started 15 games last season, completing 65% of his passes and leading the team to a 7-8 record.
