Fan who won 50/50 raffle at Commanders game said his check bounced

What sounded like classic sports-talk radio hijinks turned out to be a real error involving the Washington Commanders. 

On The Team 980’s ‘Russell & Medhurst’ show Wednesday morning, caller ‘Mike from Pennsylvania,’ a Commanders season-ticket holder, explained what happened to his friend who won the Washington Commanders Charitable Foundation 50/50 raffle during the Sept. 11 game against the Jacksonville Jaguars. 

The check – $14,822, half of the $29,645 pool – bounced when his friend tried to cash it. 

The Commanders confirmed in a statement Wednesday that there was an issue and blamed it on a ‘bank error.’ The team digitally sent the money.

‘We’ve reached out to the fan and sent an electronic payment directly to his account,’ the statement read. ‘It was a bank error, and we have reached out to the bank to determine what happened, and to ensure it doesn’t happen again.’

The fan is ‘Drew from Rockville (Maryland),’ who later called into the show. 

‘Just kind of disappointed, but I guess I shouldn’t expect much more, right?’ said Drew, also a season ticket holder. 

The radio station reported that Drew provided a photo that showed a FedEx Priority Overnight shipping container. Drew said he took photos of the check and the container to cover his bases, and that he received the check dated Oct. 13 – more than a month after the season opener. 

Drew said he spoke with a ticket representative Wednesday morning who transferred him to an employee in the finance department. The team was working to fix the issue ‘rather quickly’ he said.
